In 2007 newly formed Colas Rail unveiled four newly liveried Class 47 locomotives, having previously relied on hired Class 57s to fulfil its timber hauling contracts. This was early evidence of the ambition Colas Rail had to obtain and grow its own fleet of freight locomotives. The first two locomotives to be overhauled ready for service were No. 47727 ‘Rebecca’ and No. 47749 ‘Demelza’. In April 2016 locomotive No. 47749 had its original name 'City of Truro' restored.

Between 2016 and 2017, ROG purchased a total of five Class 47 locomotives from Riviera Trains and Direct Rail Services to complement their Class 37s. The British Rail Class 47 or Brush Type 4 is a class of diesel-electric locomotive that was developed in the 1960s by Brush Traction. A total of 512 Class 47s were built at Brush's Falcon Works in Loughborough and at British Railways' Crewe Works between 1962 and 1968, which made them the most numerous class of British mainline diesel locomotive. They were fitted with the Sulzer 12LDA28C twin-bank twelve-cylinder unit producing 2,750 bhp (2,050 kW) – though this was later derated to 2,580 bhp (1,920 kW) to improve reliability – and have been used on both passenger and freight trains on Britain's railways for over 55 years. Despite the introduction of more modern types of traction, a significant number are still in use, both on the mainline and on heritage railways. Introduced to service as D212 in May 1959 and the third of the production series to be delivered, 'Aureol' was officially named in 1960. By 1974 when the locomotive was re-numbered 40012 under TOPS the locomotive's nameplates had been removed, yet despite this the locomotive's name was painted onto the bodyside before 1985 withdrawal. Reinstated in 1985 to assist with the remodeling of Crewe Station, restricted to a top speed of 35mph, and given the departmental number 97407.This extension to the service life of number 40012 resulted in the locomotive being purchased for preservation.

British Railways originally ordered ten Class 40s, then known as "English Electric Type 4s", as evaluation prototypes. They were to be used as replacements for steam locomotives, usually hauling passenger services. The prototypes were successful enough to warrant a further 190 production models. It was initially worried that the locomotives lacked the power needed to maintain the speeds required on express services and as a result the capability to run in multiple was considered a main design feature. This resulted in the inclusion of small gangways at each end of the first 145 units. After this point it was realised that multiple running was rare and could be achieved without the gangways. The first 125 units were built with a disk route identification. When unfolded the disks were white with a small hole to allow a light to shine through during the night. When the top half of the disk was folded down the back was painted so as to blend into the locomotive and make it clear the disk was not in use. A few locomotives forwent the disks and simply relied on lights or the more traditional lamps, lamp irons having remained a feature. The disk system was soon abandoned in favour of the more modern headcode system, initially requiring split headcodes to accommodate the gangway doors. Once the gangway doors were abandoned the split headcode boxes were combined in a central position where the gangway doors had previously been. The arrival of more powerful locomotives such as the class 47, 50 and 55 along with the electrification of the WCML made the Class 40s redundant, relegating them to freight duties for which they were not well suited. Withdrawals began in 1976 with the majority of locomotives being withdrawn in the early 1980s. Locomotive D232 was built in 1959 and entered service in September that year. The locomotive was named 'Empress of Canada' in March 1961, named after the vessel operated by Canadian Pacific Steamships. Under the TOPS numbering system, the locomotive became 40032 in late 1973. The locomotive was withdrawn in February 1982 and scrapped at Swindon Locomotive Works.

Beginning life as the BR Class 101 unit 50338 On its entry into departmental service the unit would be reclassified as a class 960 and renumbered 901002, it would also gain the name Iris 2 which would be displayed in place of a destination on its destination boards. Iris 2 functioned as a lab for Network Rail undertaking tests around the UK. As Iris 2, the DMU appeared in a Serco Railtrack livery, Network Rail livery and a unique grey Lab 19 livery. Iris 2 is currently preserved on the Barry Tourist Railway in a BR Green livery.

A top speed of 143 miles per hour was obtained. Initially the Class were used primarily on mail trains. In June 2003 EWS lost the Royal Mail mail train contract, with services diminishing to complete cessation in March 2004. 20189 entered BR service in 1967 as D8189 delivered to a shed in Nottingham. The locomotive would be renumbered under TOPS to 20189 and withdrawn from BR service in September 1990. The locomotive is currently preserved by 20189 Ltd in its original 20/0 condition and is mainline certified. The locomotive is painted in a BR Blue livery with Loram Rail decals, having been one of two of the class to be briefly painted in a Balfour Beatty white and blue livery.The Class 20 model is fitted with a three pole motor connected to the motor bogie via a driveshaft and worm. 20189 entered BR service in 1967 as D8189 delivered to a shed in Nottingham. The locomotive would be renumbered under TOPS to 20189 and withdrawn from BR service in September 1990. The locomotive is currently preserved by 20189 Ltd in its original 20/0 condition and is mainline certified. The locomotive is painted in a BR Blue livery with Loram Rail decals, having been one of two of the class to be briefly painted in a Balfour Beatty white and blue livery.

The Class 20 model is fitted with a three pole motor connected to the motor bogie via a driveshaft and worm. Traction tyres give the model extra pulling power and an 8 pin DCC socket allow for digital operation.
