Early British Railways Coaches 1948-1957

Era 4 Crimson & Cream livery
Maunsell's diagram 2652 Third Class Dining Saloons were built in 1927 to provide an area for Third Class passengers to make use of the kitchen services provided in First Class kitchen/dining coaches. The exterior of the coaches utilised the 'low-window' Maunsell styling, with ventilators above the windows and doors at each end which were gently recessed to accommodate their grab handles within gauging limits. Inside, each coach could accommodate sixty-four diners and two toilets were located at the end of the coach furthest away from the kitchen/dining First Coach.

Dimensions - Length 275mm.

A detailed model of the GWR style auto trailer coaches built by British Railways for use with class 14xx, 64xx and 4575 locomotives in push-pull trains. These coaches were constructed on 63ft underframes and given GWR series diagram numbers A38 and A40. The body followed the traditional GWR design with a three-window bowed front end, providing the driver with a good view of the line ahead when the coach was being propelled. Body construction was updated in style, with more modern smooth sides.

The models' detailed underframe includes suspended steps and representation of front end cab control apparatus along with a host of features such as bogies fitted with all axle phosphor bronze (low friction) bearings. The bodyshell features a detailed passenger interior and roof detail includes individually fitted GWR style shell vents. To cap off these great models, we have incorporated prototypical length buffers and buffer beam detailing accessories.

Model painted in the BR crimson and cream livery, usually reserved for express passenger trains but often applied to these auto trailers at partisan GWR workshops, despite orders to desist from the Railway Executive! Era 4 1948-1956.

The GWR traffic department made extensive use of the gangway fitted Siphon G ventilated milk vans for carrying passenger luggage, parcels and pre-sorted mail by regular passenger trains services and by the network of dedicated parcels and mail trains. In the mid 1920s a revised design of Siphon G appeared with inside body framing, the external vertical planked body now presenting a much more pleasing appearance. Vehicles to this basic style continued to be constructed into the early British Railways era, with the last being withdrawn circa 1980 having been used as newspaper sorting and packing vans, taking the daily national papers into the West of England.
Model finished as British Railways W2977W a former GWR diagram O.33 Siphon G van painted in the initial BR plain crimson or carmine red livery.

This six wheeled coach is a representation of the many small coaches which survived into British Railway ownership. Small coaches such as this six wheeled coach proved especially good at branch line work where their small size enabled the traversing of tight radius curves, whilst lower passenger numbers meant their small size was more acceptable and enabled trains to be hauled by smaller engines.

This BR coach is modelled as having step boards to enable access at stations with low platforms and electric lighting.

New highly detailed models of the South Eastern & Chatham Railway (SECR) 60-feet length passenger stock featuring raised, glazed lookouts in the roof over the guard's compartments referred to as a birdcage lookout due to the similarity to an aviary enclosure. These distinctive coaches had long service lives, the Southern Railway investing in electric trains rather than building new steam hauled stock suburban services. These SECR coach sets, along with many other pre-grouping suburban coaches will still in service into the British Railways period after 1948.

This coach is painted in the British Railways crimson livery, ideal for use with the many former Southern Railway locomotives and BR Standard class 4MT 4-6-0 and 2-6-4 tank engines which worked on the Southern. Era 4 1948-1956 (BR early emblem period)

The GWR Siphon series of vans were built for milk traffic conveyed in churns. The vans had always be found useful as general parcels and passenger luggage vans, which became their primary use after bulk milk tankers were introduced. The Sip[hon H had a higher roof line and end doors, making them suitable for loading wheeled vehicles as well as in general parcels service.

A highly detailed model of the LMS engineers inspection saloon coaches. These inspection saloons were used by the regional civil engineers as a mobile office and conference facility. Large end windows allowed the track and structures to be viewed while travelling while the large saloons allowed for meetings and the planning of engineering works on site. A small kitchen and pantry in the centre of the coach allowed for refreshments to be supplied by an on-board steward.
The Bachmann model features saloon interior detailing at both ends of the coach plus full underframe and folding steps detailing.

All of these coaches are Era 4 models. Details of the periods covered by the era numbers can be found here.

After several trials British Railways selected a livery of crimson and cream for its' mainline passenger coaches and plain crimson for suburban and parcels coaches.
It takes a very long time to build and repaint a fleet of passenger coaches, offering a great variety of coach stock for modelling this time period. The new BR standard Mk.1 coaches were coming into service alongside the older pre-BR coaches, many still painted in their old company colours. Slowly the company colours disappear as until 1957, when BR changed to lined maroon for new repaints. Even then the crimson and cream livery was only slowly displaced.

Heritage railways and mainline tour train sets have ensured that crimson and cream liveried coaches have survived to be seen alongiside the newest trains in service today.
