Bachmann OO BR(S) 25 Ton Brake Van Departmental Olive Green Weathered 38-404A

Bachmann Branchline OO 38-404A SR 25 Ton Pill Box Brake Van BR Departmental Weathered

Sometimes known as Pill Box vans these guards brake vans were designed for the Southern Railway in the 1930s, showing the steady development from the short wheelbase brake vans of earlier years towards the familiar BR standard design of the 1950s. The longer wheelbase (distance between the axles) provided a better ride for the guard, also allowing an increase in the weight and therefore effectiveness of the hand brake. Side lookout duckets allowed the guard to keep an eye on the running of the train and to watch for signals which may need him to apply the brake to help bring the train to a halt.

This model is painted in the British Railways engineering department olive green livery.

The long length wagons easily accomodated crossing timbers (extra-long sleepers), while full drop sides allowed ballast and spoil to be unloaded easily, while the removable ends allowed longer loads to be accomodated.

Bachmann OO BR MK1 BG Full Brake Departmental Olive Green Weathered 39-186

Model of a BR Mk.1 design BG gangwayed full brake coach with guards' office and hand brake in service with one of the BR engineering departments.

The railway engineers departments were divided into areas of specialisation, principally mechanical (locomotives & rolling stock), civil (track and infrastructure) and signal & telegraph (signalling and communications). Each department used spare coaching stock for a range of purposes, from moving stores to mobile workshops. Vehicles fitted with hand brakes were the first choice as these coaches would often be stored during the week and these vehicles could also be used as both barrier coaches and as guards' vans for moving other vehicles between depots and repair works.

Bachmann OO BR Departmental Ex-LMS Composite Coach Olive Green Weathered 34-254

Model of a LMS 57-foot composite coach after being adopted by the BR engineers and painted in the overal olive green scheme used for engineering vehicles. Completed with a weathered finish, as engineering vehicles were almost never cleaned!

When withdrawn from service many coaches were still in a weatherproof and usable condition. Frequently these old but servicable coaches would be re-used, sometimes for many years.

The engineering departments often acquired old coaches for a number of tasks, including as crew riding vehicles for major tack-relaying projects and breakdown gangs. In the 1960s a large fleet of pre-nationalisation coaches were used in connection overhead electrification projects, some with their rooves fitted with working platforms.

An exciting new addition to the Bachmann Branchline range, the Ransomes & Rapier 45-ton steam crane. These cranes were built as breakdown cranes, able to lift wagons and coaches singly or in pairs able to lift the heaviest of locomotives. The cranes were also used for routine infrastructure and permanent way duties, being able to lift bridge girders into position and assist with erecting signal and later overhead electrification gantrys.
A batch of these 45-ton lifting capacity cranes was built in 1940 to provide new and higher rated cranes (previously 36-ton lifting capacity cranes were common) to the railway companies during WW2. Being of a consistant design and quite new in 1948 these cranes served long into the British Railways years, still being deployed to accidents and engineering projects in the 1980s, sometimes in preference to newer diesel cranes! The two Southern region cranes were the last steam cranes on BR when sold into preservation in 1989.

Dapol OO EWS Turbot Bogie Open Ballast Wagon 4F-043-001

A detailed model of the BR engineers Turbot bogie open ballast wagons featuring a finely moulded body with many separately fitted details.

The Turbot wagons were converted from BR bogie bolster E wgaons between 1982 and 1988. Three drop-doors were added to each side of the wagon with ixed and substantially braced ends. 'Wings' were soon added to the ends, helping to reduce the length of the gap between two wagons when a train was being loaded with waste ballast from a ballast cleaner on a parallel track.
The Turbots proved quite versatile, being used for moving new ballast to storage locations, taking old ballast for disposal and for moving large boulders for use as coastal sea defense. The type was generally withdrawn in 2002, but many have joined the engineering fleets of heritage railways, light-rail systems and London Underground.
