When withdrawn from service many coaches were still in a weatherproof and usable condition. Frequently these old but servicable coaches would be re-used, sometimes for many years. The engineering departments often acquired old coaches for a number of tasks, including as crew riding vehicles for major tack-relaying projects and breakdown gangs. In the 1960s a large fleet of pre-nationalisation coaches were used in connection overhead electrification projects, some with their rooves fitted with working platforms.
