The GWR received two of the ex-LB&SCR 'Terrier' 0-6-0 tank engines from the Weston Clevedon & Portishead Railway when the independant line closed in 1940, the GWR being one of the major creditors. The more powerful, Portishead, received an extensive overhaul and was used for a number of light shunting roles around Bristol and in the West Country until withdrawn in 1954.
The terriers proved very useful as shed pilot engines at Bristol St Philips Marsh shed as they would fit on the turntable alogn with another tank engine. One of the two was also loaned out to Frys at Keynsham, being small enough to traverse the sharp curves in the chocolate factory and the engines shunted at the temporary army camps created to accomodate American troops prior to the 'D-Day' invasion of Europe.
