9741, one of the later Collett cab locomotives, was completed at Swindon early in 1935 and sent to Wolverhampton Stafford Road, then being outstationed at Oxley shed until 1941 when the locomotive moved to the south side of the black country at Stourbridge. 9741 remained on the allocation of either Stafford Road or Stourbridge until a move to Wellington (Salop) at the end of 1953.
The British Railways lettering was usually applied during 1948/49, before the early lion over wheel emblem transfers became available. The workshops at Stafford Road shed would have been able to carry out this kind of work, so it is likely that 9741 required a light overhaul during this timespan.

9741s subsequent moves were to Worcester in March 1957, back to Wellington in July. To Shrewsbury in November 1960, returning to Wellington in December before final withdraw in August 1962.
