Dapol N BR 33016 Q1 Class 0-6-0 Locomotive Early Emblem 2S-021-001

Dapol N 2S-021-001 BR ex-SR Class Q1 0-6-0 Goods Engine 33016 Black Early Emblem

The iconic Q1 class 0-6-0 was designed under wartime restrictions to provide the Southern Railway with a modern robust, reliable and ecconomical goods engine at a time when locomotives were urgently needed for military traffic. Innovative locomotive engineer OVS Bulleid produced an unconventional design which minimised materials usage by removing non-essential parts and made extensive use of fabricated components to reduce building time and cost.

Dapol have fitted the motor into the tender on their model using a drive shaft to power the locomotive wheels. This has allowed the locomotive to accomodate more weight and maintains the clearance between the boiler and frames. Maximum effort has been put into detailing this essentially quite plain looking locomotive, the models feature separately fitted handrails, white headcode discs, fine rivet detailing, a removable tender coal load and see-through Boxpok pattern wheels with blackened pickup wipers.
Finally, DCC fitting has been made easy with a 6-pin NEM651 socket.

Graham Farish N SE&CR 810 N Class 2-6-0 Mogul SECR Grey 372-933

Graham Farish N SE&CR 810 N Class 2-6-0 Mogul SECR Grey 372-933

Bachmann Graham Farish N gauge model 372-933 of South Eastern and Chatham Railway locomotive 810, one of the Maunsell N class 2-6-0 mogul locomotives. This model is painted in the SE&CR grey livery.

Richard Maunsell took over the post of chief mechanical engineer of the South Eastern & Chatham company in 1913 and set about modernising the companys' steam locomotive fleet. The 2-6-0 mogul type locomotive allowed a larger boiler to be carried that could be fitted to a 0-6-0 'standard' goods engine, while the leading truck provided a steering action, guiding the rigid driving wheels into curves. Following the lead of G J Churchward on the GWR Maunsell specified modern, efficient piston valves and the squarer Belpaire style firebox. The result was a modern and efficient locomotive which served across the Southern Railway system until the end of mainline steam in Britain.
Introduced during WW1 the first N class locomotives were painted in plain 'battleship' grey under SE&CR ownership, probably not being repainting until after the grouping into the Southern Railway in 1923.
Richard Maunsell retired as CME of the Southern Railway in 1937, by which time the Southern had embarked on a programme of electrification as the future answer for rail traction. Unfortunately only one of the N class moguls survives.

Era 2 (pre-grouping). DCC Ready 6 pin decoder required for DCC operation.

Graham Farish N BR 31844 N Class 2-6-0 Mogul BR Lined Black Early Emblem 372-931

Graham Farish N BR 31844 N Class 2-6-0 Mogul BR Lined Black Early Emblem 372-931
Designed by R E Maunsell for the SECR during WW1 the N class moguls were useful and flexible locomotives. A powerful and modern design, the N class mogul combined features needed to give the locos the ability to haul freight trains at a good speed and tackle some of the more challenging routes in Devon with express passenger services. This type of 'secondary' motive power was the backbone of the British steam fleet and a very welcome additon to the range of Southern steam locomotives available in N gauge.

This model of 31844 is painted in BR mixed traffic lined black with early type lion over wheel emblem. Fitted with smoke deflectors and paired with a straight-sided tender.
Era 4, 1948-1956. NEM coupler pockets. DCC Ready 6 pin decoder required for DCC operation.

This model is finished as Southern Railway 3250 painted in the late Southern livery with sunshine lettering.
