BR Mk1 BCK brake composite coach in BR blue and grey livery.
The BCK was a useful coach, containing accomodation of first and second class passengers, plus a guards' office and small luggage van. In earlier times brake composite coaches were used as through coaches, so passengers did not have to change trains. In the blue/grey era the BCKs were used on lightly loaded trains, eg. winter services in the far north of Scotland, where the single coach provided all the passenger accomodations needed. Many were held as spares, as they could be used as a stand-in most other coaches. | |

The traditional second class side corridor coach was the most numerous type used by British Railways until the 1970s and many of these coaches remained in service into the 1980s.
This model is painted in the corporate blue and grey livery introduced in the mid 1960s and carried by many of these Mk.1 coaches until withdrawn in the late 1980s. | |

The miniature buffet coach provided a small refreshment counter taking up the space of only a few seating bays in the coach, while retaining a good seating capacity for second class passengers. The counter could supply hot and cold drinks, snack and pre-packed food.

A very good model of the BR Mk2E air-conditioned coach as equiped with a minature buffet counter. These coaches were modified for use as replacements for the older Mk1 buffet coaches. One end seating bay and the adjacent toilet were converted to accomodate a small counter, refreshment trolley, store and hand washing facility, while customers benefitted from the comfort and air conditioning.
