Network rail operate a small fleet of ex-passenger coaching stock. many formed into test trains to carry out various test, evaluation and survey tasks. These trains may be away from base for several days at a time, so additional coaches are required for crew sleeping and mess accomodation. At least one brake vehicle is required to accomodate the on-duty guard and ensure a hand brake can easily be applied when the train is stabled.
