The NASA reusable space transport system is now getting on in years and will shortly be replaced by a more up-to-date system. The total weight of the space shuttle ready for take-off is 2055 tonnes. It can carry a payload of 300 tonnes in an orbit up to a height of 965 km above the earth and is in active service as means of transport for many research missions. The Discovery took off for the first time on 30th August 1984. It is also in continuous use by the shuttle flights engaged in the construction of the international space station ISS. The special features of the large model space shuttle include a detailed cockpit anddetailed cargo compartment with movable hatches.
