In 1955 after the USA took over from France as the protective power in Vietnam, an authoritarian regime was set up with American help in South Vietnam. The South Vietamese Vietcong immediatley began their resistance in the form of guerilla actions against the regime and US installations. The war escalated in 1965 and American bombardments followed together with the deployment of up to 536,100 soldiers. It was not until 1973 that the USA withdrew all troops because the war was doomed to faliure. | |
