The 64xx class locomotives were built during the 1930s to provide engines capable of operating up to 4 coach auto trains. The first 30 of the near identical 74xx class were built alongside the last batch of 64s, with orders for further 20 being completed after nationalisation. The 74xx class were intended for branch lines where auto train working was not used, so the mechanical and electrical connections were omitted, while the boilers were set at a higher working pressure, giving a small addition in tractive effort for goods train working.
Lines worked by the 74xx class engines ranged from rural Oxfordshire and Wiltshire to coastal towns in west Wales and the mountainous line to Blaenau Ffestiniog.

7444 was completed by British Railways in February 1950, though it is most likely this was completing a Great Western order carried over before nationalisation. The engine was sent new to Carmarthen from where 74xx class engines were supplied for a number of rambling, rural branch lines in west Wales. Built quite late in the steam era. 7444 was destined to have a short life, with Camarthen shed closing in 1964 following the closure of the branch lines it served. 7444 moved to Llanelly in February and was withdrawn from service in July 1964. The Camarthen to Aberystwyth 'main line' closed to through traffic two months later.
