The GWR 64xx class locomotives were built in the mid-1930s to provide a more powerful locomotive type for working auto trains. Whereas the 4-coupled tank engines of the 517 and metro types could manage 2 trailer 'auto coaches' the new panniers were intended to work with up to 4 trailers. As only two coaches could be coupled to either end of the locomotive due to the stiffness of the mechanical linkages 3 and 4 car formations were worked in 'sandwich' mode with locomotive in the centre of the train.
A sub-type numbered in the 74xx series were also built without the auto train apparatus for service on branch lines where conventional passenger coaches were used, many of them working scenic routes across mid and west Wales.

6435 was sent new to the Cardiff Valleys division Cardiff Cathays shed for services on the valley and dock routes around Cardiff. The locomotive spent time allocated to several of the divisions sub-shed including Abercynon, Merthyr, and Cardiff Radyr. 6435 was at Cardiff Cathays at nationalisation until 1953 when the engine recommenced touring the sub-sheds, now carrying the BR black livery standard for all execept express passenger locomotives. As the South Wales sheds were closing or being rebuilt for servicing diesel traction 6435 moved on to the Newport divisions Tondu shed in August 1962 before a final BR service move to Yeovil in October 1964. One of the last remaining auto train services the Yeovil engines operated shuttle services between Yeovil Junction(SR) to Yeovil Town and Yeovil Pen Mill (WR).

After withdraw 6435 was purchased for preservation on the Dart Valley Railway and restored to service on the Buckfastleigh to Totnes line, later moving to the Paignton to Kingswear Torbay Railway. The engine moved further west in 2008, being purchased in 2008 by the Bodmin & Wenford Railway in Cornwall.
