Osprey The Armada Campaign 1588 (1841761923)
The thwarted invasion of England by the Spanish Armada is studied here in fascinating detail. How, in a few short days, Philip II's fleet was stopped from invading England and forced into full retreat is looked at in a new and unique way. With the help of battle plans and bird's eye views of the action, leading historian Angus Konstam considers many of the intriguing questions surrounding the campaign, concluding with details of how the Armada's disastrous return voyage around Scotland and Ireland became one of the most tragic episodes in maritime history.

Sutton Publishing German Navy Handbook 1939-1945 (0750932058)

During World War II, the German Navy became a much feared adversary both on and beyond the high seas, with its marauding U-boat "wolf-packs" coming close to defeating Britain in the Battle of the Atlantic. Here Jak Mallmann Showell examines the different roles of the Fleet, and its organization and training activities during ther war years. Incidents and operations are also described, together with technical data for ships, U-boats and their weaponry. A useful guide to German Navy uniforms and insignia is included, together with details of rank structure and specialist trades. This authoritative study of the formidable Kriegsmarine in World War II should appeal to anyone with an interest in the armed forces of the Third Reich.

Osprey The Armada Campaign 1588 (0850458218)
In the latter part of the 16th century, Spain was the major international power and her leader, King Phillip II, pledged to conquer the Protestant heretics in England. He envisioned a two pronged attack. He would send his ???Invincible Armada??? of 125 ships into the English Channel where it would link up with the Duke of Parma. The Armada would ferry the Duke's soldiers across the straight of Dover and these troops would march on London, seize the Queen, and proceed to conquer the entire country. Over 400 years have passed since this momentous expedition 'sailed and failed', but its fascination and significance remain undiminished.

Osprey British Motor Torpedo Boat 1939-45 (1841765007)
During the Second World War, flotillas of the Royal Navy's Motor Torpedo Boats and other coastal forces fought a deadly war for control of the English Channel and the North Sea. These small, fast boats attacked enemy convoys, escorted freighters, landed secret agents and even raided enemy ports. Unsung heroes, these craft and their tiny crews helped stave off defeat in the dark days of 1940. The same vessels then took the fight to other waters, and by the end of the war, British MTB's had seen service in the Mediterranean, the Baltic and the Far East. This book examines the development and operation of these frail, sleek little warships, and describes the way they were manned and how they fought.

Osprey German Heavy Cruisers 1939-45 (1841765023)
The development of this excellent and successful class of warship only became possible after the Anglo-German naval agreement of 1935 eased restrictions on the types of ship Germany could build; even then only five of the class were permitted: the Admiral Hipper, the Bl??cher, the Prinz Eugen, the Seydlitz and the L??tzow. These Cruisers were designed for Atlantic operations and had eight 8 inch guns, 12 10.5 cm heavy anti-aircraft guns and 17 smaller calibre anti aircraft guns as well as twelve torpedo tubes and their own compliment of up to six aircraft. This title covers the design, development and operational history of the Heavy Cruisers of the Admiral Hipper class.

Osprey British Battlecruisers 1939-45 (184176633x)
When war broke out in 1939, only three true battlecruisers remained in the Royal Navy including HMS ???Hood???, the world's largest and fastest capital ship for much of her life, which would be destroyed in action against the German battleship ???Bismarck???. Out of the remaining two battlecruisers (???Repulse??? and ???Renown???) one was sunk by Japanese aircraft off Singapore, whilst the other served with distinction until the end of the war. This book traces the pre-war development of these spectacular warships, then describes their wartime exploits, using this to demonstrate their operational and mechanical performance. It examines what life was like on these wartime battlecruisers when they sailed into action.

Osprey Wolf Pack, The Story of the U-Boat in World War II (1846031419)
Germany's World War II U-Boat fleet represented the elite of their naval personnel. In terms of technology, training, tactics and combat successes, the U-Boat Waffe was far superior to that of any other combatant nation. In this comprehensive book, the wartime development of the U-Boat is traced along with the experiences of typical U-Boat crewmen, from recruitment to combat. The author examines the operational tactics of the U-Boat fleet, as well as describing the massive bunkers that housed them. 'Wolf Pack' contains material taken from Fortress 3: 'U-Boat Bases and Bunkers 1941-45', Warrior 36: 'Grey Wolf: U-Boat Crewman of World War II' and New Vanguards 51 and 55: 'Kriegsmarine U-Boat 1939-45 (1) and (2)', with the addition of a new section on wartime tactics

Osprey U-Boat Crews 1914-45 (1855325454)
If one single weapon in Germany's arsenal can be said to have come closest to winning the war for the Third Reich, it was without doubt the U-Boat. German U-Boat technology, training, tactics and combat successes far exceeded those of any of the other combatant nations, and even as the Third Reich was crumbling, technically advanced vessels such as the Type XXI, many years ahead of its time, were being put into volume production. Gordon Williamson provides a fascinating overview of the achievements of the U-Boat Waffe in both wars, together with a study of the uniforms and insignia worn by U-Boat crews.

Sutton Publishing Battle of the Atlantic (9780750929127)
The Battle of the Atlantic was one of the major turning points of World War II, and the very survival of Britain depended on its outcome. Fought largely between the German U-boats and Allied convoys, this deadly battle involved vast amounts of men, airplanes, ships and submarines fighting above, across and beneath thousands of miles of ocean. In the end, the Allies won - but only just. This book examines the battle from both sides. On the side of the Allies, ships of the Royal and Commonwealth navies and aircraft of the RAF played by far the greatest part in this battle, supported on the other side of the Atlantic by elements of the US and Canadian air forces and navies. The German Navy's U-boat force, and to a lesser extent its surface vessels, were the skilled and determined assailants who very nearly won the day. Following the formula adopted in his two previous books ("RAF: An Illustrated History" and "The Battle of Britain"), Roy Nesbit has written a short, but detailed, narrative of the battle, accompanied by a selection of some 200 archive photographs and painting

Just Clicked Publications Setting Sail for the New Millennium (096888380X)
It was billed as "the tall ships' race of the century" and "the youth event of the millennium year", and so it was. Seventy-five sail training "tall ships" from 25 countries took part in the 10,000 mile race. 7,000 young people, aged between 15 and 25, and from nearly 30 countries, made up most of the crews. Some 14 million people visited the seven ports when the fleet was in. And media coverage worldwide was colossal - print, radio and television coverage in over 30 countries, and the Tall Ships 2000 web-site peaked at over one million "hits" a week. This is the official Tall Ships 2000 Race book, covering all seven ports - Southampton, Genoa, Cadiz, Bermuda, Boston, Halifax and Amsterdam. Three race legs - Southampton - Cadiz, Boston - Halifax, Halifax - Amsterdam. Designed to convey the spirit of the event in chronological order in a special year, the photographs set out to capture many aspects of the race and unique moments of the four and a half month odyssey circumnavigating the North Atlantic

Sutton Publishing Crash Dive - HMS Safari 1942-3 (9780750931748)
This historical record of life on board HMS Safari is based on original first-hand accounts. As the boat's leading telegraphist, Arthur Dickison had a privileged position in the crew, with access to all signals traffic and the navigation officer as his boss who gave him an insight into why they were doing what they did. Over 18 months of war patrols he kept a personal diary of life aboard Safari, which was strictly against the rules. In it he records daily events ranging from the tedium of long sea passages to stalking enemy convoys, crash dives and fighting it out on the surface.
