The M1 Abrams is the standard battle tank of the U.S. Forces and is considered to be one of the best of its category. It has superior fire power, excellent protective armor and high speed even when passing through rough terrain. Sophisticated sensors and night vision instruments enable the tank to operate efficiently at any weather condition.

The Sherman is one of the most famous tanks of World War II, and was also the standard tank of the allied armies. The M4 was fairly well protected with armor but not sufficient enough to confront the 88mm guns of the Germans. It had a valid engine, was reliable and had sufficient range as well as armament.

The Churchill medium tank came into service with the British Army in 1942 to support and replace the earlier Valentines, Matilda’s and Crusaders, which, by then, were all outdated and inadequate in terms of both armour and weaponry, easily falling prey to the more advanced German tanks. Equipped with thick armour and a reliable engine, it proved to be tough and dependable, later being produced in ever-more efficient, upgraded versions. Its chassis was also used as a platform for specialised support vehicles such as the mine clearer, the bridge layer and the flame-thrower.

The need to oppose the ever more powerful Russian tanks led the German army to develop several specialised solutions: the Elefant tank destroyer of which only a limited number were ever produced, was one of the most famous. Mounting a devastating 8.8 cm gun it could fight the feared T 34 even at considerable range, yet as it had no machine guns to protect it from close-range infantry attack it often proved vulnerable.

This large triple shaft amphibian vehicle was developed during the 2nd World War for the American armed forces. The aim was to build a vehicle to supply ammunition, food and materials stored in the holds of transport ships to invading troops occupying beachheads on enemy soil immediately after landing. The DUKW offered good navigating qualities and could move well off-road too, which combined with its high load capacity, enabled it to perform its logistic role to the full. In the post-war years it was widely used by USA’s allies all the way through to the 70s, including civil protection assignments.

This British howitzer (25-pounder, 8 mm calibre) was the standard gun for the British Army throughout the Second World War. Offering good ballistic performance, it also had the advantage of high mobility (thanks to the Morris Quad towing tractor), each gun was towed together with its own ammunition trailer to ensure good firing autonomy without having to rely on supplies from logistics services.

The 232 was used right up until the early stages of the WWII when it was replaced by more modern, efficient armoured cars. It featured a three-axis chassis with twinned rear wheels, light armour and a 2 cm cannon.

The M 13/40 medium tank entered into service with the Royal Italian Army in 1940, replacing the previous models which were judged to have inadequate armament and armour plates in comparison to the English models met in North Africa at the beginning of the conflict. The M 13 was the first tank of Italian conception with a turret cannon with a 47 mm calibre gun. It was soon proven to be insufficient against the amour plates of the Allies. Even so, it was extensively used on all fronts until the armistice in 1943.

SD. KFZ 234/1 In The beginning the heavy armoured car 234 was supposed to replace all similar vehicles of the German Army. Several variants were built to explore the anti-tank role and artillery support task. This version, equipped with a 20 mm gun was the first one to be used by reconnaissance units. The 234 was a reliable cross-country vehicle, but its armament proved inadequate against similar enemy vehicles, which were generally equipped with 37 or 57 mm guns.

The ISU 122 anti-tank vehicle was built over the chassis of the JS 2 Stalin heavy tank and used a powerful 122 mm cannon which allowed it to face Tiger and Panther German tanks. Many hundreds of units were built, and in its numerous versions it eventually became the standard vehicle to accompany motorized infantry divisions of the Soviet army.

The T 34 is considered among the best tanks used in the 2nd World War. Although simple in design, this vehicle was extremely robust, combining high speed with excellent off-road performance, plus good armament. Additionally, it was considerably armour plated and this aspect considerably reduced the efficiency of the German anti-tank cannons, at least in the initial stages of the war. Moreover, it featured an accentuated hull shape which increased its ballistic protection. Different gradually improved versions of the T 34 were used throughout the War, giving a satisfactory account of themselves against Germany’s massive Tigers and Panthers.

This highly mobile vehicle was built for the needs of the American army during the WWII, to provide its units with an efficient means to transport its men and supplies close to the front-lines. The WC-51 had a simple design but was extremely sturdy, with a good load capacity and was widely used by the allied forces in all operational theatres. Various versions were developed from the basic transport vehicle: ambulances, workshop and transmissions support means, as well as a platform for small calibre anti-tank cannons.

Various versions of the Valentine tank were used by British armoured divisions on all fronts up until about half way through the Second World War. Its thin armour made it vulnerable to mines and enemy anti-tank fire and its firepower was often inferior to that of its German counterparts. Nevertheless when fleets of Valentines were coordinated properly they managed to obtain good results, especially on the African front.

This German army artillery tractor was used extensively during the WWII. Featuring excellent drive characteristics the Sd.Kfz. 11 could tow all anti-tank artillery, a good number of the medium-calibre howitzers and even complex multiple rocket launchers. The same chassis was used to produce an armoured version for the transport of troops or infantry support weapons.

This armoured car was standard issue with the reconnaissance units of the U.S. Armoured Divisions in Europe during the second half of 1944, and was extensively used by the free French Forces during the liberation of French territory. The M-8 was characterized by a futuristic shape for its time and high mobility. At the same time it did not have sufficient armour and armament to fight the German tanks, the open turret did not offer any protection for the crew. After World War II the Greyhound was widely used by many European armies.

The VW Type 82 Kubelwagen won instant acclaim on account of its excellent all-terrain performance, despite its lack of raw power and rear-wheel drive. The original design dates back to December 1939. it was initially given a lukewarm reception, being criticised on account of its rear-mounted air-cooled engine and lack of four-wheel drive. However following successful trials in Poland, the doubts were soon dispelled and its performance was deemed equal to that of any 4-wheel drive off-road vehicle.

Based on the 3/4 ton all-wheel-drive standard truck of the U.S. Army a number of special vehicles were created. This Dodge truck was equipped with a 37 mm anti-tank gun and first saw action during the last years of World War II. Due to light armor shields the M6 proved very mobile.

This armoured personel vehicle was been developed for the American army during the fifties and then was largley exported for the western allied armies. Released in alluminum for reduced weight for better air transportation.The M-113 is also used as weapons platform for the antiaircraft and antitank role.

The Opel Blitz medium truck was used extensively by the German Army on all fronts during WWII. Several thousand of them were produced and they were also used as platforms for anti-aircraft weaponry and tanker, workshop and ambulance versions were made. Of sturdy construction and easy to maintain, it also featured good off-road performance which made it invaluable in both the Russian and African campaigns.

The Mark IV self-propelled tank-killer was built on the chassis of the Pz.Kpw. IV, one of the most efficient and widely used German tanks of the Second World War. Characterised by a low profile, the Mark IVs were produced in their hundreds, steadily being improved and fitted with better weaponry such as the long-barrelled 7.5 cm gun that made it a match for any Allied tank.

This gigantic self-propelled tank-killer was built on the chassis of the heavy King Tiger tank, which entered service with the crack armoured divisions of the German Army in 1944. The Jagdtiger mounted a mighty 12.8 cm cannon that could destroy any allied tank before it got within firing range. Its thick armour made it near invulnerable to enemy firepower, yet its weak point was the unreliable engine which resulted in most of them being abandoned and destroyed by the Germans themselves when they found it impossible to fix breakdowns.

This small half tracked vehicle was used by the German army during the Second World War from the beginning to the end of the conflict. Given its good mobility the vehicle could operate in different conditions from the deserts of North Africa to the muddy countryside of Russia. The Sd.Kfz.250 was present in all of the mechanised units covering a large variety of roles:, command and communication, with a wide supply of radios, half platform for anti-tank weapons and reconnaissance vehicle.

This version of the armored car M-8 was developed in 1944 to supply the U.S. Forces with a fast, all-terrain reconnaissance vehicle. The M-20 was practically identical to the previous vehicles, but was deprived of the 37 mm gun (inadequate to confront German tanks) and served to escort infantry units. Both versions participated in all final phases of World War II. The French army used them extensively during the following years.

First it was used by the Legion Condor during the spanish war; later this tank was also used in Poland, France, Northern Africa and at the eastern war theatre.
