The Nieuport 21 combined a Ni 17 airframe with a Ni 11 Le Rhone 9C 80-hp rotary engine, instead of the more powerful 110-hp engine of the Nieuport 17. The Nieuport 21 was designed for advanced training purposes and most of these aircraft bought by the French Aviation Militaire served in flight schools. Some were assigned to front line units, but it seems that they were used for training there as well. Several aircraft were acquired by the Aviation Maritime and were used to practice takeoffs from a platform on the battleship Bapaume in the early 2's. The RNAS purchased five Nieuport 21s, and the USA acquired 197, where they also served as trainers. The only Air Force that used Nieuport 21s in aerial combat was the Imperial Russian Air Force. Some Ni 21s were supplied by France in 1917 and 68 were built under license by the Dux Company in Saint Petersburg. The Nieuport 21 was popular in Russia for its good manoeuvrability and reliability. They were used a long time after the war and the remaining aircraft were finally withdrawn from service in April 1925. . Technical data: Engine 80 hp Le Rhone 9C rotary engine. Span 8.16 m, length 5.80 m, wing area 14.75 sq.m. Empty weight 350 kg, loaded weight 530 kg. Max.speed 150 km/h at 2000 m, climb to 2000 m in 8.45 minutes, range 250 km, enduranc- 2 hours. | |
