The An-12 is often compared with the Lockheed C130, since both are large durable transport planes. The first prototype flew in 1958 and by 1973 when production ceased the aircraft was in use in the air forces of countries such as Agentina, China, Ethiopia, India, Iraq, Poland, Yugoslavia etc. A total of about 900 aircraft were built, many being used in a civilian capacity. Military use included the transport of heavily armed paratroopers during the Soviet-Afghanistan operation in the 1980's. Ten years later some were still to be found in service, although largely replaced by the IL-76.
