Viewed alongside a battleship in the same scale, the enormous size of 20th Century airships is immediately apparent!

Made to a constant scale of 1:1250 to match the waterline ships the metal air ship models are supplied in a Perspex display case that has a nicely finished wooden base with the model supported on two pylons. Finish is good in authentic colours with transfers providing marking detail. The aircraft are of course tiny and aren't in display cases.

The airship was 148 metres long and its volume was 18700 cunic metres. Power was provided by 3 Maybach motors of 170PS. A successful airship that nonetheless only lased until 1916. At 803.8 feet in length and 135.1 feet in diameter, the German passenger airship Hindenburg (LZ-129) was the largest aircraft ever to fly. The commercial flights of Hindenburg, along with Graf Zeppelin, pioneered the first transatlantic air service. She carried hundreds of passengers and travelled thousands of miles before being destroyed in a tragic fire on May 6, 1937 at NAS Lakehurst.
