The "Cat", one of the most famous and successful seaplanes of World War II, was used in large numbers by the American und Allied air forces. The remarkable machine combined maximum adaptability and a long range with robustness and reliability, establishing numerous long-distance records since its maiden flight in 1935. The "Cat" was first used in active service by the RAF from early 1941. It was a Catalina of the 209th wing that located the battleship Bismarck in May 1941, leading to her ultimate destruction. 116 "Cats" were supplied to the RAF alone. The main areas of deployment were coastal patrol, sea rescue and antisubmarine defence. Power unit: 2 x P&W R-1830 double-bank radial engines with a power output of 1,200 HP each. Crew: 8 men. Maximum speed: 286 km/h at an altitude of 2,140 m.
