The P-38 was an exceptionally adaptative long range fighter with enormous fire power that was used on the Pacific and European front. 2.970 P-38 J were used as from august 1943; with two drop tanks it had a range of 3.799 km at a speed of 666 km/h at 7.620 m altitude. In Europa it was reinforced for ground attack and was nicknamed "Fork tailed Devil" by German fighter pilots. In the last part of the war the radar equiped two-seat night fighter P-38 M saw operational use.
