The B-26 was one of the most successful medium-range bombers of World War II. Decried initially as "widow maker", it soon proved its high degree of reliability even under heavy flak during low-level flying. Flown for the first time in November 1940, the B-26 was not put into service until 1942 when it operated from Australian air base. In May 1943 it got its baptism under fire in Europe. Power plant: two P&W R-2800-43twin engines each delivering 2,000 hp. Maximum speed 455 km/h at 1500m; range 1770 km; payload 1814g of bombs.
