The Wessex HAS3 was an improvement on the HAS1 and featured a large dorsal fairing and random housing search radar, for which the aircraft was nicknamed camel. Later on all machines were given the distinctive parrot's beak front air intake. The HAS3 entered into service in 1967. All had advanced equipment including the advanced automatic flight control system, sonar and search radar which were later fitted to the anti-submarine Sea Kings. Most of this version was replaced in 1982 by the Westland Lynx. The Wessex HAS3 carried a crew of four and had a length of 20.1 metres, a height of 4.8 metres and a main rotor diameter of 17.1 metres. It was powered by a Napier Gazelle 160 turbo shaft engine giving it a maximum speed of 222 km/h.
