The Hawker Hurricane achieved its greatest successes for the RAF in the Battle of Britain in 1940, but it was also represented in all other theatres during World War II. At the beginning of the war, 19 RAF squadrons were equipped with Hurricanes. In the Battle of Britain Hurricanes destroyed more German aircraft than any other aircraft and air defence systems. This warplane was used mainly against enemy bombers but also against tanks. Heavily armed with four 20 mm cannon, the Mk IIC version could also carry bombs and auxiliary tanks. More than 4,700 Mk IICs were built up until September 1944.
