The Northrop F-5 is a light-weight tactical fighter which was developed by the USA for friendly nations within the framework of the Military Assistance Program (MAP). The good results gained from the T-38 (trainer version from 1961) encouraged Northrop to build a figher version on their own account - the N-156.F. The single-seater version finally went into service with the USAF as the F-5A and was further modified and improved, culminating in the F-5E version. The first 13 F-5E's for Switzerland were still manufactured by Northrop in Palmdale, while the subsequent aircraft were built under licence by the "Eidgenössische Flugzeugwerke" (Confederate Aircraft Works). In all, Switzerland took delivery of 98 aircraft of the F-5E type.
