The B-17 was one of the most famous American bombers during the Second World War and due to the multiplicity of its weaponry was also known as the "Flying Fortress". The bomber units operated at very high altitudes and defied all defensive measures over enemy territories. They were used both over Germany and in the Pacific and the Mediterranean. The famed B-17F "Memphis Belle" belonged to the 8th Air Force. It flew a total of 25 missions, withstood numerous fighter attacks and suffered flak damage. It later returned to the USA and can be seen today in Memphis, Tennessee.
