Colors: 4 42 57 65 75 89 371 Famous as the last propeller driven US Navy attack aircraft, the Skyraider remained operational for over 20 years. Under the designation AD-1 Skyraider, between 1947 and mid 1948, Douglas built 242 machines that were used both by the US Navy and by the US Marines. Designed as a dive-bomber, the Skyraider was characterized by an extremely robust construction, which made it very advantageous for use on aircraft carriers. A total of 3 airbrakes provided sufficient deceleration for the heavy machine to dive. Whereas the French Air Force did not use these airbrakes on their AD-4s, the American Air Force flew the A-1Hs and A-Is they took over from the US Navy in part with functional airbrakes. In particular, its robust construction and its enormous weapon load made the Skyraider into a very versatile combat aircraft, as used from 3rd July 1950 in Korea and also from 1964 in the Vietnam War. As these machines had been designed to be carrier-borne, they could be used without difficulty at almost any time from the often very inadequate landing strips in the Far East. The production of the Skyraider at El Segundo came to an end on 18th February 1957 with the 3180th machine - an AD-7.
