Without any doubt the Mustang was one of the most exceptional and effective combat planes of World War II. It proved to be a powerful and versatile weapon, as suitable for long-range escort duty as it was for ground support. The P-51 came into existence in April 1940 in response to a British specification with special requirements for a new fighter. Deliveries to the RAF started in October 1941 and it even exceeded the performance of the Spitfire, so that eventually the US Air Force also ordered this fighter.
