The Phantom F-4E/F is reputed to be the workhorse of the western air forces. Thetwo-seater fighter-interceptor with guided missiles is one of the most powerful versatile aircraft of the period after World War II. It is in service in 11 counincluding 5 NATO states. The German air force alone flies 273 of these hot rods of a total build of 5,000. The prototype few for the first time in 1958. Shortlyit demonstrated a spectacular 15 best performances, such as the world records fomax. altitude of 30,040 m and max. speed of 3,085 km/h. Based on experience gained with the first combat operations in Vietnam, in 1967 the F-4E fighter verwas produced with a six-barrel 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannon with 640 rounds installedunder the nose. It also received new slats to improve manoeuverability, more powerful engines (GEJ79-17 with 8,120 kp thrust each) and internal tankage. In 1the West German air force received the F-4F version (almost identical to the F-4and used the 185 planes as fighter-interceptors or fighter-bombers. The West German air force enhanced the combat capability of the F-4F by changing over to Hughes APG-65 multi-function radar and equipping it with the AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium Range Anti-Aircraft Missile). Max. speed: Mach 2.17 at 10,000 maltitude, range: 2,830 km, external weapon load: 7,250 kg.
