Revell 1/32 Focke Wulf FW 190 D-9 (04725)
Paints Required: 46 47 49 59 68 99 363 364 In wartime the Dora Neun (as it was known) was a very successful and powerful aircraft - contrary to the preconceived ideas of the pilots who originally had been unable to get to grips with a Fw 190 with a bomber engine. However it quickly became clear that the D-9 with a service ceiling of over 10,000 m was able to operate at much higher altitudes and more particularly was able to nose-dive at previously undreamed of speeds of almost 750 kph. The D-9 originated in 1942 from the requirement to develop a special high-altitude fighter. Later the German Air Ministry asked for a stopgap solution in the form of an intermediate series. Focke Wulf took the fuselage and wings of an A-8 and combined them with a 1,900 hp Jumo 213A in-line engine. From August 1944 to April 1945, despite a gradually worsening procurement situation and continual attacks from the air, about 1,805 of the type Fw 190D-9 aircraft were built. The development of the high-altitude fighter Ta 152 also gave rise to a new design for the vertical tail surfaces; this enlarged vertical tail unit was called a standard tail plane. The D-9 also received small numbers of this larger vertical tail unit within the series.
