The Seafire was the Royal Navy's best and most powerful fighter in the second world war. When the war at sea became increasingly critical in 1941, it was essential to find a high performance replacement for the Navy's Fulmer and Wildcat planes. The Seafire proved highly successful and the first Seafires were equipped with no more than an arrester hook and heavier weapons, hence 'hooked Spitfires'.
