During the 1960s the West came under increasing threat from the ever-growing tank regiments of the Eastern bloc and the Bundeswehr (German Federal Armed Forces) began to consider using helicopters to combat these units. Initially the Bundeswehr had ordered 130 helicopters of the type SE 3130 Alouette II. This was followed by a further order of 117 Alouette II with the first aircraft delivered in mid 1959. The helicopters were fitted with the Nord 5210 - also known as the SS-11 - and this missile could be used to attack targets on the ground. This SS-11 could achieve a maximum speed of 492 km/h. For flight testing of the Alouette II helicopter armed with the SS-11 in the anti-tank configuration, a comprehensive range of modifications was carried out. The control system for the SS-11 was installed in front of the left-hand seat and could by operated via a weapons sight by the on-board weapons officer. Two weapons pylons - one on each side of the helicopter - could carry two SS-11 missiles each. The firing trials were carried out by the testing unit of the Heeresflieger-Lehr-Staffel 700 (Army Air Corps training squadron) in Achum close to Bueckeburg, Germany, in 1962. Results from testing the first five helicopters did not, however, come up to expectations and the programme was soon discontinued. more..

more | Revell 1/32 Messerschmitt BF109 K4 (04702)
The Bf 109 is one of best known Luftwaffe fighters of World War II, with a total production of over 33,000 in a wide variety of versions. In 1943, in response to the massive Allied bomber threat, the order was placed for a high-altitude fighter. The prototype 109 K-4 was made in October 1943. With the K series all the previous modifications to the G series were united in one aircraft giving an overall improvement to its flying capabilities. For the new DB-605 D with large loader and MG 131 a wider engine cowling without any protruberances was designed. The engine cowling is shown without any protruberances. One MK-108 was used as an engine-mounted cannon. The K-4 also had an aerodynamic fairing in order to improve performance. The plywood equipment panel was redesigned. To save on aluminium, some of the components were made of wood and sheet steel. In production all the machines were equipped with an MW-50. Up to April 1945 about 1700 of the K-4 were produced.

The Hawker Hunter is still one of the most elegant jet fighters ever to have been developed, a genuine legend. It went into service in large numbers with the Royal Air Force from 1954 onwards and was a popular aircraft with many aerobatics units. The prototype flew for the first time in 1951 and two years later set the ultimate speed record. The Hunter is known for its simplicity of operation and its stable flying characteristics, making it the favourite of every pilot who has ever flown it. About 2,000 Hunters have been built; they were in active service with 18 different air forces. During the nineteen fifties and sixties the Hunter was known by the RAF and NATO as the "watcher of the skies". Although the F6 version was essentially designed as a fighter interceptor, it could also carry bombs and up to 16 guided missiles. Some of the Dutch F6s also received AIM-9B Sidewinder missiles that were carried on external pylons. Most of the Hunter F6s were used by squadrons stationed in Great Britain, but by 1957 the RAF squadrons in Germany and some other units in the near and far east also had it. Many Hunters were exported or manufactured under licence, under which system the Belgian and Dutch air forces were two of the main NATO users. The last Hunter did not go out of service until 16.12.1994, a splendid tribute to the capabilities of a magnificent aircraft.

more | Revell 1/32 German Fokker DR.1 WW1 (04744) Manfred von Richthofen, the "Red Baron" and his red Fokker triplane made history in the Great War. Introduced to the western front in June 1917, the General Staff released the Fokker Dr. I only after an extended test phase and following approval by the flying ace Manfred von Richthofen. The Dr. I was the most manoeuvrable of all the aircraft deployed at the time and achieved high climbing speeds. The Oberursel radial engine (power output 110 PS) gave the Dr.I a maximum speed of 193 km/h and enabled it to climb to 3000m in six minutes. Two Spandau MGs were installed forward of the cockpit. All the pilots in Richthofen's group flew red triplanes. Although the Dr.I was withdrawn from the western front at the end of 1917, the Red Baron continued to fly this type to bring down a total of 80 enemy planes before being shot down himself y Captain A. Roy Brown in April 1918.

more | Revell 1/32 Eurocopter EC145 (04481)
The EC 145 is a medium-heavy, twin-engined helicopter that was developed in collaboration by Eurocopter and the Japanese firm Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The BK 117C-1 was the predecessor of the new helicopter designated the type BK 117C-2 that became the EC 145 after the production line was taken over. The first machine made its maiden flight on 12th June 1999 at Donauwörth. The first machine for the Sécurité Civile was handed over in May 2001 at NŒmes in France. Compared with the BK 117, the EC 145 has a new fuselage with a roomier cabin. Advantages of the new rotor blades on the EC 145 are a considerable reduction in vibrations and a 25% increase in range. The EC 145 is approved for blind flight and can be operated by one or two pilots and at night. Its particular advantage as a rescue helicopter lies in the greatly extended range by comparison with other helicopters in the same category. The EC 145 is therefore the first choice for flying patients over long distances to special clinics. The ADAC currently operates two helicopters of this types stationed at Mainz and Senftenberg (Brandenburg). more..

more | Revell 1/32 Heinkel He162 Salamander (04723) After receiving the design specifications in December 1944, the prototype of the He-162 flew for a mere 38 days. Following a succession of quick rolls, the machine veered off to the right and crashed to the ground, plummeting the test pilot to his death. Despite this tragedy, Henkel decided to continue with the programme. Recognising that development had been too hasty, the weak points were soon identified and in the following January the first improved He-162s were delivered for trials with the troops. By May 1945, 116 aircraft had been built, 50 of which were deployed by the fighter squadrons in Leck.
more | Revell 1/32 Eurocopter EC-145 REGA (04492)
The Eurocopter EC145 offers plenty of space for patient, doctor, pilot and paramedics, has a long range and a powerful rescue winch. The EC 145 is the fully upgraded successor to the familiar BK117 and EC135. As a first step towards the replacement of the REGA helicopter fleet, in 2003 the lowland bases at Basel, Bern, Lausanne and Zürich were equipped with a Eurocopter 145. Today the fleet consists of 5 type EC145 helicopters and 8 type A 109 K2, including one Eurocopter and two Agustas in reserve. By the end of 2009 the remaining Agustas will also have been replaced. The REGA Swiss emergency service is the largest air rescue organisation in Switzerland. 13 helicopter bases are distributed throughout Switzerland so that under good flying conditions points of accident (except: Wallis Canton) can be reached in 15 minutes flying time.
