With Orville Wright at the controls, the very first flight in a motorised aircraft took off; it was the birth of modern aviation. The aircraft was driven by a 4- cylinder engine and the propeller was set in motion by a chain drive. On its maiden flight this astonishing flying machine remained in the air for 12 seconds and flew for approximately 36 metres. This was followed by a second flight that lasted one minute.
