The EA-18G is Boeing and Northrop Grumman's proposed replacement for the aging fleet of EA-6B Prowlers, key components in America's "electronic war" capability. Based on the F/A-18F Super Hornet, with which it has 90% of parts in common, it features the very latest version of the "search and disturb" system already installed on the Prowler, two AGM-88 HARM missiles to attack enemy radar stations and two AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles for self-defence. The use of tried and tested systems should smooth its introduction considerably: at present it is still being evaluated, yet the makers say they expect to deliver the first mass-produced models in 2009. Given the growing importance of electronic war in modern conflicts and the lack of direct rivals, the EA-18G's future in the U.S. Navy seems assured. | |

The F7F Tigercat was developed by Grumman to be shipped on Midway aircraft carriers. However trials showed that the dimensions of this twin-engined aircraft created serious operative problems, and soon a decision was taken to destine the Tigercats, originally delivered to the Marines, to land bases. The first units were in line during the last months of WWII, but were never aligned in an operative area. The F7F first saw service in the Korean War, where the two-seat version F7F-3N, equipped with a radar, obtained good results in night fights. A total of 364 units of F7F were built. | |

The first MiG-23 spin-off for ground attack was the MiG-23B, whose prototype, Izdeliye 32-24/1, flew on 18th February 1971 with a Lyulka AL-21F engine. When compared to other fighters, the most evident change was on the nose, completely redesigned to favor vision towards the ground, and it was equipped with specific instruments. The definitive MiG-27 was reached through the MiG-23BN; the MiG-27 was propelled by a Soyuz/Khachaturov R29B-300 engine and was equipped with a PrNK-23S navigation and attack system and a Fon laser telemeter. Air intake was simplified as there was no longer the need for supersonic flying, and larger wheels were added; the maximum weapon load of this version reached 4,000 kg, other than the 30 mm six-barrel gun GSh-30A, with 5,000 hits per minute. | |
