Airfix 1/48 Curtis Kittyhawk Mk1A Fighter WW2 (05109) The Curtiss Kittyhawks were the ultimate versions of the successful 1930's range of Hawk fighters. The name Kittyhawk was used by the British Commonwealth forces who supplied them on lease from America, differing from their American counterparts in radios and other internal equipment. They first went into action in the Western Desert against Rommel's forces on New Years Day 1942, however they performed poorly at high altitudes and were not suitable for the war in Europe. Most RAF and Southern African Airforce versions were used in the desert war in North Africa. They also equipped the Royal Australian Airforce during the Pacific war, the Royal Canadian Airforce and the Royal New Zealand Airforce. The Kittyhawk MkIA was armed with six 5in. calibre machine guns, and in the ground support role carried bombs or long-range fuel tanks.
