The A rospatiale/Westland SA.330 Puma is in front-line service with the Royal Air Force
and the French Army.
Designed as a tactical troop transport to a 1963 French Army requirement, the Puma was selected by the RAF for operation by 38 Group, Air Support Command. Manufactured jointly by A rospatiale and Westland, the Puma order book includes 40 aircraft for the RAF, equipping two squadrons, 33 and 230, and 140 aircraft for the French Army (ALAT). The Puma is capable of high speed and good manoeuvrability on the power of its two Rolls-Royce/Turbom ca Turmo 111C4 engines rated at 1,328 s.h.p. Normally flown with a crew of two, the Puma can accommodate up to 16 fully armed soldiers. Overall dimensions: Rotor diameter 49 ft 2 ins; fuselage length 46 ft 1 in. Maximum speed 174 m.p.h. at sea level. Fuel capacity 341 imp. gal. Optional markings supplied with this kit depict a Puma HC Mk 1 of 33 Sqn based at RAF Odiham in 1972 and a French ALAT machine.
