Airfix 1/72 Chinook Helicopter (05030)

The Boeing Vertol CH-47 Chinook is a medium lift battlefield troop, weapons and cargo transport helicopter and has served for many years around the world, mainly in military service but also in civilian use; the largest user has been the United States Army.

The original design dates from the late 1950s when the Army was formulating improved air mobile capability. The Vertol Model V-107 YHC-1A was evaluated and was quickly found to be unsuitable; following the merger of Vertol with Boeing, two of the larger model BV-114, designated YHC-1B, were ordered for evaluation. The first of these flew on 28th April, 1961 and five pre-production and 234 production HC-1Bs were ordered in 1961, by then the type was named Chinook and in 1962 redesignated CH-47A. There was an urgent need to introduce the Chinook into the Vietnam war zone, where these built up an impressive service record. In 1967 deliveries began of the improved CH-47B, followed by the CH-47C in 1968. This model also featuring uprated engines and an additional ventral cargo hook so that increased loads could be carried. The first of a batch of seven basic CH-47Cs entered service with UHel V of the Spanish Army Aviation (ALET, Aviacion Ligera del Ejercito de Tierra, later retitled FAMET, Fuerzas Aeromoviles del Ejercito de Tierra) at the Los Remedios base near Madrid in mid 1975; these were almost identical to their U.S. Army counterparts and were followed by further deliveries in 1977/8. Initially these aircraft featured the small engine intake mesh guards that were later changed to the standard larger size and lacked many of the extra features of some other Chinooks such as those delivered to the Royal Air Force, who ordered 33 Chinook HC1s in 1978, the first one flying March 1980. RAF machines featured three ventral cargo hooks capable of carrying a 9,526 kg (21,000 lb) load and sophisticated radio and communications equipment; the type entered service with no. 240 Operational Conversion Unit at the end of 1980, no. 18 squadron in 1981 and no. 7 squadron in early 1982 - these units all based at RAF Odiham, UK. Britain's Royal Air Force ordered 33 Chinook HC1s in 1978, the first flying in March 1980. The RAF subject in this kit is a machine which served with no. 18 squadron in late 1981 and was one of the first seven delivered. Soon afterwards, these (along with many other CH-47s around the world) were retrofitted with glass fibre roto blades, the RAF HC1s also receiving radar warning receivers and several other external additions. The most famous of all RAF Chinook HC1s, 'Bravo November' was the only survivor out of four machines sent to the 1982 Falklands War area in the ill-fated Atlantic Conveyor; it often lifted excessive loads and on one occasion carried 80 troops! A total of 270 CH-47Cs were built. Fuselage length: 15.53 m (51 ft) Rotor diameter: 18.27 m (60 ft) Height: 5.68 m (18 ft 8 in)
