Airfix 1/72 Mosquito MK X1X RAF Fighter Bomber (03062)

The prototype two-seat Mosquito, built to Air Ministry specification B.1/40 for an unarmed high-speed bomber-reconnaissance aircraft, first flew in 1940.

The success of the NF.II night fighter in night intruder operations resulted in the development of the Mk. VI fighter-bomber, the most widely used of all Mosquito fighters with some 2,500 built. Delivered to the RAF from February 1943 and powered by Rolls Royce Merlin 21 or 25 engines it was heavily armed. The Mosquito NF.SIS was a night fighter developed from the Mk.XIII, which was itself based on the Mk. VI airframe. It was fitted with AI Mk.VIII or AI Mk.X (American SCR 7200) radar, initially in a 'thimble' nose and later in the 'universal' nose. Delivered to the RAF early in 1944, and based at Swannington, the NF.SIS was temporarily detached to West Malling where it was used with considerable success by No. 157 (S.D.) Squadron, between 27th June and 29th August 1944, on anti V-1 'Diver' patrols, claiming at least 20 V1's. The more normal role was bomber support during the night offensive over Germany, in which it concentrated on attacking the Luftwaffe night fighters. 280 NF.XIXs were delivered to the RAF by the end of the war, and post war 60 of these were refurbished, fitted with four-bladed propellers, and supplied from 1948 to the Swedish Air Force, which designated them as Mosquito J.30s. Serving with Nos. 1, 2, and 3 Divisions (Squadrons) of F.1 Wing at Vasteras, they remained in service until their timely replacement from 1954 by D.H. Venom night-fighters in 1953-4. This kit includes optional markings for RAF and Swedish Air Force machines. Both versions were powered by two 1,219.7kW (1.625 hp) Rolls Royce Merlin 25 in-line piston engines, giving a maximum speed of 608 km/h (378 mph) at 4,023m (13,200ft). Range, at sea level: 2,944 km (1,830 miles) with underwing fuel tanks. Wing span: 16.49m (54ft 2in). Length: 12.64m (41ft 6in). Height: 4.64m (15ft 3in). Armament: four 20mm cannon in the underside of the nose.
