Airfix 1/72 USAF F-15E Eagle Dual Role Fighter (05028)
To counter the potential threat of the Soviet MiG-25 "Foxbat" fighter, McDonnell Douglas conceived the F-15 Eagle.
First Flown in 1972, and rapidly entering service with the USAF from 1974, considerable numbers were supplied to Israel and Saudi Arabia, with Japan building its own F-15Js. Improved F15Cs and Ds are also in widespread service, and by the late 1970s the "Strike Eagle" version was developed for the ground attack role, this leading to production of the two-seat F-15E dual-role fighter. Airframe additions include the "Dash-4" conformal fuel tanks, which are considered as permanent fixtures for the E model and carry additional weapons pylons. The F-15E also features a completely new "high-tech missioned" cockpit, and the more capable APG-70 multi-mode radar and targeting systems which can be switched between the ground display and air-to-air modes. The F-15E first flew on 11th December 1986, and 200 were ordered; it entered operational service with the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing in 1990, its 335th and 336th Tactical Fighter Squadrons being deployed to Saudi Arabia for Operation "Desert Storm". Later retitled the 4th Fighter Wing under Air Combat Command, F-15Es have also entered service with the 48th Fighter Wing, USAFE, at RAF Lakenheath, England, from February 1992. Markings for both of these units are included with this kit. The F-15E is powered by two Pratt & Whitney F100-P-220 turbofans each rated at 63.95 kN (14,370 lbs.) dry thrust or 104.35 kN (23,450 lbs.) with afterburners, giving a maximum speed of 2,655 km/h (1,650 mph) at high altitude (later versions have the more powerful F100-P-229 engines). Wing span: 13.04 m (42ft 9.75in). Length: 19.42m (63ft 9in). Height: 5.62m (18ft 5.5in). Armament: one internal M61A1 Vulcan 20mm cannon, and up to a maximum of 11,000kg (24,250lbs) of tactical ordnance carried under nine external stations; also air-to-air missiles including AIM-7M Sparrows, AIM-9 Sidewinders and AIM-120A AMRAAMs
