Typically a DCC controller has an in-built power supply limit, ranging from 1 to 4 amps. While this will run a number of N or OO gauge trains larger locomotives in O, 1 and G gauges need more current and as you expand your layout, adding more trains and accessory decoders, the limit can soon be reached. A power booster or amplifier provides a source of extra power to increase the total available for your trains and layout features. On large layouts you can divide the track into sections to help spread the load, linking the control signal line to the boosters so trains will run seamlessly over the joints.
