Iarnrod Eireann's 201 Class locomotives are the newest and most powerful diesel locomotives operating in Ireland. A total fleet of 34 were constructed by GM-EMD at London, Ontario between 1994 and 1995, with two locomotives owned by NIR for joint cross-border operations. The locomotives use the EMD 12cylinder 710G3B engine, as also fitted to the 'class 66 family', set at 3200 bhp and have a maximum speed of 164 km/h (102 mph) for express passenger duties. Due to the high profile usage all members of the class are named after Irish rivers, carrying the names in Irish and English on IE locomotives and in English only on the two NIR-owned locomotives.

To speed up clearance and acceptance testing and commence driver training in advance of the main delivery of new locomotives number 201 was flown from Canada to Dublin by air, using an Antonov An-124 heavy lift aircraft, arriving on the 9th of June 1994. Testing from the IE Inchicore works commenced on the 14th. Regular deliveries by sea proceeded steadily through late 1994 into 1995.

The class introduced several features new to Irish rail operations, including the provision of head end power, or electric train supply from the locomotive. Previously IE used generator vans to provide power to the train, however the reduction in locomotive hauled services in Ireland has seen the HEP/ETS capability used only on the cross-border Enterprise service.
