The first of the Mk.3 design coaches were built for the experimental
diesel powered High Speed Train in the mid 1970s. This was successfully
developed into the HST train which is still in service today, over 30
years later. These coaches do not have side buffers or coupling hooks,
therefore could not be conventionally coupled to a locomotive.
