The raid on Dieppe took place on August 19, 1942 and turned into one of the greatest Allied disasters of the war. Of the 4,963 Canadians who took part, 3,367 were killed, wounded or taken prisoner. This model, Cheetah, is a Mark III Churchill which features the 1st Canadian Army Tank Brigade symbol of a black ram on a yellow maple leaf on a black square. The hull rear plate bears the Infantry Tank marking and regimental number.

The Panther was hurried into production for the 1943 advance on Kursk, before reliability problems had been sorted out. Although it went on to have a fiercesome reputation, with the US Army suggesting it took five Shermans to knock out a single Panther, the Battle of Kursk was an initial disaster for the Panzer-Regiments using it. Cromwells and Centaurs were generally armed with 75mm guns but had close support variants armed with 95mm. The only Centaurs to see action as gun tanks (as opposed to bulldozers and recovery vehicles), were 95mm variants (Centaur IVs) attached to the Royal Marine Armoured Support Group. 80 such Centaurs were to have formed the first wave of the D-Day assault, though not all made it ashore. Many special modifications were made: the bow machine gun was removed and plated over, mudguards were removed and their turrets were marked with degrees like a protractor, to enable the gunfire to be directed. At the last minute, it was decided that the Centaurs would have to go ashore, so further water-proofing modifications were made. They were also provided with armoured sleds (porpoises) to carry extra ammunition, since as the first vehicles ashore, they could not be re-supplied.

The M16 was the standard US Army light antiaircraft vehicle used following the Normandy invasion with every armored division having an AAA Weapons Company with eight M16s. By the end of the war the general absence of the Luftwaffe meant that these M16s could be used in a ground support role, where they earned the nickname “meat-choppers”.

Which brings us to the matter of Dragon’s fantastic fully built-up Elefant. This 1/35 scale model represents an Elefant serving with 1./s.Pz.Abt.653 in Italy in 1944. This is Dragon’s very first pre-assembled plastic Elefant with some metal parts and much effort has gone into investing this collectors’ item with all the relevant Elefant characteristics. The impressive model is beautifully finished in a two-tone camouflage scheme, enhanced by a subtle degree of weathering. The tracks are accurate and have the appropriate level of sag, plus the tow cables possess an extremely realistic metallic look. There are also working features such as a rotating frontal machine gun and a main gun barrel that elevates and depresses. These details all add up to one stunning pre-assembled 1/35 tank destroyer from Dragonmore.. | |

Officially named the Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. B, the King Tiger was a formidable German tank weighing 69.8 tons. Entering production in mid-1944, it was armed with an 8.8cm KwK 43 L/71 gun and its frontal armor was up to 180mm thick. With such assets, this tank could easily prey on its less well-armed Allied opponents. However, its bulk and underpowered engine meant it wasn’t as effective in offense. Dragon Armor has launched a fantastic new fully built-up 1/35 scale model of a King Tiger. This is the very first Henschel production version of the King Tiger to feature in the larger-scale Dragon Armor range. The actual vehicle it is based on was a tank of sPzAbt 506 that fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes in December 1944. Interestingly, this was the only Heer Tiger battalion to participate in the winter offensive. This version has a full coat of zimmerit on the hull and turret, which has been carefully and realistically crafted and textured to scale. | |
