Tarmac Ltd. commenced the manufacture of Tarmacadam from slag in 1903 and was the pioneer of the use of Slag Tarmacadam in connection with the repair and construction of roads etc. Since that date many millions of tons have been supplied by Tarmac Ltd. The eight wheel rigid has served the British haulage scene well.Many hauliers used them fitted with a bolster turntable plus an independent bogie and the combination made easy work of these 50' bridge beams. These Vinculum beams were made by Tarmac in the Viniculum Dept. who manufactured large quantities of building materials, road kerbs, channel, paving flags etc
The headquarters of Siddle C Cook's distinctive fleet was on Sherburn Terrace, Co Durham.Transporting steel from Consett Iron Company gave Cook's regular work although Siddle learnt the practical skills of moving heavy loads by extracting timber from the forests of Northern England.The business was sold to the Tayforth Group in 1964 and lost its identity to the NFC.
