During the Great War a German publisher produced a number of books drawing on photographs taken by members of the German regiments that found themselves in the front lines. The Germans at Arras is based partly on two of these books and covers the bitter fighting in 1917. Other photographs have been unearthed through the authors' research. Together with this superb collection of contemporary German images the authors introduction, chronology and description of events, gives a fascinating historical context, vividly conveying the experience of the towns and villages of the area from Douai to north of Cambrai under German occupation.
