The P-47 Thunderbolt was manufactured by Republic Aviation and was one of the main United States Army Air Force fighter-bombers of WWII. First flown in 1941, it entered service in 1942 and was subsequently used by several other Allied Air Forces during the conflict. Nearly 16,000 were built and the sturdy, rugged aircraft proved to be a particularly effective short to medium range escort fighter in high altitude air to air combat, as well as a ground attack fighter-bomber in both the European and Pacific theatres of war. Officially retired in 1966, the P-47 still appears at air shows, where it continues to draw the crowds. Our replica is modelled on the USAAF aircraft 42-26041 of 22nd Fighter Squadron, 36th Fighter Group, 9th AF Belgium, as flown in the winter of 1944. Painted in all over silver with green canopy and anti-glare shield, the model has a wealth of detailed decoration, including the bright red 'Doogan' nose art. The blue and white US star emblems feature on the underside as well as on the fuselage, where additional black and white banding has also been faithfully reproduced, along with the 220641 numbering. Black banding also features on the tail where the rudder is painted in yellow. The gloss black engine is housed within red engine cowling and the black propellers are finished with yellow tips. And - if that is not enough - even the wing lights are highlighted in red and green adding a final touch of authenticity.
