Corgi 1/76 Green Goddess Auxilary Fire Service (DG221001)

The Green Goddess is an icon of emergency motor heritage and despite their age, many are still in working order today. Originally developed in the event of a Soviet nuclear strike, the Green Goddess was a fire engine used by the AFS (Auxiliary Fire Service) until its disbandment and more recently by the British Armed Forces during fire strikes of 1977 and 2002 (codename Operation Fresco). These largely green-painted vehicles were built between 1953 and 1956 based on an army truck, weighed in at 7.5 tonnes and had a top speed of 45mph. In 2005 the Ministry of Defence sold more than 20 as the government disposed of surplus vehicles. All of the machines were sold for between 3,500 and 7,500.

Corgi 1/76 Green Goddess EFS based at Manston Museum Kent (DG221005)

In the first instance it was the Air Raid Precautions Act of 1937 that gave the provision for a volunteer force to supplement the regular brigades in the event of war and this instigated the formation of the Auxiliary Fire Service. The Green Goddess fire engines were brought into service during the 1950s; their role was not only fire fighting but also for the clear up after nuclear bomb attack.

After the Cold War many of the Green Goddesses were surplus to requirements and were sold off to local authorities and works fire services. This model in the striking lime green finish is now privately owned but can be seen on occasions at themed events throughout the UK.
