The original Jolly Rogers was VF-17, established in 1943. In 1946 they were re-designated VF-5B and then VF-61. In 1959 they were disestablished freeing up the name Jolly Rogers. The original VF-84 was formed in 1944 as the Wolf Gang and deactivated in May 1945. During the Korean War VF-921 became VF-84 and then became VA-86 in 1955. A new VF-84 was created called the Vagabonds. With the dissolution of VF-61, VF-84 became Jolly Rogers. In 1995 the 84th was deactivated and VF-103 Sluggers took the name and skull and cross bones emblem in an effort to save the Jolly Rogers.

The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a twin-engine, variable sweep wings capable of supersonic flight. The aircraft is crewed by a Pilot and a Radar Intercept Officer who share the tasks of navigation, target acquisition, ECM and weapons usage. The Tomcat was operated by the United States Navy and the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force only. The name Tomcat is said to come from the call-sign used by Vice Admiral Thomas Connolly which conformed to the USN tradition of giving Grumman aircraft feline names.
