Hobby Master 1/72 MiG 21RF Czech Air Force "2101" (HA0146)
Originally built by the Mikoyan and Gurevich Design Bureau in the Soviet Union with a NATO nickname Fishbed No other jet has had as many planes produced as the Mig-21. Depending on the reference source 8,000 to 13,000 planes of all versions were made in the Soviet Union, under license to allied countries and China without license. At the time of its introduction into the Soviet Air Force service in 1959, it was exactly what they wanted. A small, fast, agile, dependable and most importantly simple making it easy to turn out great numbers of the plane. The skies of Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia and Central America seemed to be filled with thousands of the Mig- 21. Because of its relatively low cost since it was heavily subsidized by the Soviets, it became the plane of choice for many third world countries. Taking this into account this plane this plane has seen more wars then any other modern day jet. The Mig-21 was used in front line service for over 30 years equaling that of the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. There were 5 generations of the plane in many versions and each generation brought with it great improvements over its predecessors.

Hobby Master 1/72 UH-1B Iroquois "A2-1020" RAAF, Battle Of Long Tan 1966 (HH1010)
There were 766 Bell UH-1C helicopters built in several equipment modified variants. One was the "Frog" equipped with side-mounted XM-158 twin rocket pods each holding seven 2.75 inch rockets. The "M-5" fitted the gunship with a nose turret mounting an M-75 40mm automatic anti-personnel grenade launcher that held 300 anti-personnel grenades. The crews referred to these as "Chunkers" because of the sound when the grenades were fired. The infamous "Shark" gunships were created in 1966 when permission was granted to use the fearsome looking "Tiger Mouth" on the front of the Hueys.

Hobby Master 1/72 German F104 Starfighter 26 + 72, German Marine Vikings Display Team (HA1017)
The F-104 Starfighter was a revolutionary design with short razor-sharp wings. It was the first aircraft to be able to maintain Mach 2 not just in short bursts. The Starfighter shattered speed and rate of climb records that still are impressive today. This extremely high speed earned the plane the nickname The Missile With A Man In It. Because of financial considerations 15 or more countries purchased the F-104. The Starfighter flew with the USAF in 1958 and the last airplane was decommissioned in Italy in 2004.

Hobby Master 1/72 Lockheed TF-104 Starfighter USAF, 58th TTW, 418th TFS, Luke AFB, 1976 (HA1050)
The extreme shape of the Starfighter earned it the first nickname of "The Missile With a Man in it" and some USAF pilots also called it Zipper or Zipper 104 because of its tremendous speed. After it proved to be challenging to fly, with high fatal accident rates, particularly in German service the plane was given many more nicknames because of its high speed and ability to occassionally fly itself into the ground. In Germany they referred to it as Witwenmacher ("widowmaker"), fliegender Sarg ("flying coffin") or Erdnagel ("ground nail", the official military term for a tent peg). Others were, Pakistan Badmash (Hooligan), Italy because of its spiked nose Spillone (Hatpin) and bara volante (Flying Coffin), Canada Lawn Dart. Primarily powered by a single 15 800 lb thrust General Electric J79-GE11A turbojet engine, equipped with afterburner, it was capable of high speeds (just under 1300 mph) and high rates of climb. On December 14, 1959, an F-104C set a world altitude record of 103,395 ft (31.5 km). The Starfighter was the first aircraft to hold simultaneous official world records for speed, altitude, and time-to-climb.

Hobby Master 1/72 Lockheed F-104DJ Starfighter 207 Sqn., JASDF "26-5001" (HA1052)
The Lockheed F-104J was the Japanese Starfighter with the ?J? standing for Japan. The first F-104Js were just re-assembled ?G? versions and first flew in March 8, 1962. Because the Japanese constitution forbid offensive weapons the F-104J was set up purely as an interceptor. The Japanese referred to the Starfighter as "Eikou" (Glory) while other countries called it the "Widow Maker". Instead of a 20mm cannon the early variants had an additional fuel tank and could carry four Sidewinder missiles or drop tanks but no bombs.

Hobby Master 1/72 Lockheed CF-104D Starfighter Canadian Armed Force 104650 (HA1054)
The RCAF received their first CF-104 in March 1962. Although originally designed as a supersonic interceptor the Canadian Air Force used it primarily for low level strike and reconnaissance. The Canadian version of the F-104 was capable of carrying a ventral mounted Vinten Vicon pod with 4 cameras inside for reconnaissance picture taking. On September 4, 1963 number 12900 was the 200th and final CF-104 produced and entered service on January 10, 1964. The CF-104 retired from service in 1985 when it was replaced by the CF-18 Hornet. Over the 25 years of active service 110 aircraft were lost to accidents earning it nicknames like Widow Maker and Lawn Dart. The RCAF CF-104 probably had the most flying time of any variant with an average of 6,000 hours per plane over their life time compared to the Luftwaffes 3,000 hours.

Hobby Master 1/72 Lockheed TF-104G 104-22, Spanish Air Force, Late 1960's (HA1056)
The F-104G was known as the Super Starfighter, with the G standing for Germany, because they were among the first foreign orders for the Lockheed plane and they placed the largest order. Depending on the source there were between 1,122 and 1,700 G models built under license by 4 European companies, Canadair and Lockheed. The G was a multi-role all weather single seat fighter-bomber with a new upward firing ejection seat, a strengthened fuselage and wings, increased internal fuel capacity, new improved full length flaps added to the wings leading edge for better combat maneuvering, a larger vertical fin, a new radar system with air-air and air-ground modes, inertial navigation that made the F-104G the first production fighter to receive this new equipment, new infrared sight, an additional hard-point under each wing, improved weapons capability now was 4,000 lbs and beefed up landing gear and larger wheels to carry all the added weight of the improvements. The larger gear and wheels made it necessary to create a bulge in the fuselage to accommodate them. The G even received a new engine, though it didn?t deliver any more power it was a much more reliable engine. The G was considered the best version of the F-104.

Developed to replace the A-1 Skyraider the A-4 Skyhawk was extremely lightweight maneuverable inexpensive and didn't need folding wings. One of the upgrades saw 499 A- 4Es built, some received a lighter weight 8,500 lb thrust engine and some late production planes had the 9,300 lb thrust engines as well as an upper fuselage hump back avionics pod added. All had one hard point added under each wing, re-designed center fuselage, air intakes, and airframe strengthening with bomb and navigation upgrades. Because of all the missions and tonnage of weapons delivered the A-4 was dubbed The Workhorse of Vietnam, this is "The Little Plane That Could". Eight A-4Es were sold to Royal Australian Navy.

Designed by the McDonnell-Douglas chief engineer Ed Heinemann the A-4 Skyhawk met all the requirements of the US Navy and exceeded many. It was half the maximum weight, could carry four times the weapon load and small enough that it didn?t need folding wings for carrier duty. This small aircraft would earn many nicknames "Heinemann?s Hot Rod", "Scooter", "Bantam Bomber", "Tinker Toy Bomber". The Skyhawk proved to be one of the most popular US naval aircraft exports of the postwar era. Because of its small size, it could be operated from the older, smaller WWII-era aircraft carriers.

Hobby Master 1/72 McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II VMFA-451, USS Forrestal, 1976 (HA1924)
The F-4J was the last version produced for the USN and USMC. The J version was basically an upgraded B version with new radar and avionics as well as a better engine that required a longer afterburner nozzle. One of the most noticeable changes to the J version is what isn't there; the infrared seeker under the nose was deleted. Also missing was an internal gun but Sparrow and Sidewinder missiles were used for intercepting. Between 1966 and 1972 there were 522 F-4Js built. The F-4J had the distinction of scoring the only USMC air-to-air combat victory in Vietnam and it also was the last US operational aircraft in South East Asia. In mid 1970 the F-4 Phantom II was being replaced by the new and improved F-14 Tomcat.

It was quite easy to recognize from other F-4 variants because of the distinctive nose. The larger nose was designed to accommodate radar, sensors and flat windows for cameras. During its years of service the RF-4C used two nose variations. The original design was the angular version with a later design that had a smoother rounded camera bulge. 503 RF-4cs were built with 499 being officially accepted by the USAF.

Hobby Master 1/72 McDonnell Douglas F-4B USS Forrestal cross operating on HMS Ark Royal (HA1962)
One of the most famous and easily recognized fighter aircraft of the post-WWII era was the McDonnell F-4 Phantom II. This aircraft was developed as a private venture by the aircraft company but was soon ordered by the USN as a carrier-based attack aircraft. Its first flight took place on May 27, 1958 and it entered active service in December 1960. It wasn't long after the F-4B appeared that a fly-off was set up with USAF front-line fighters. It was no contest, the F-4 performed so well that the USAF ordered their own variant, the F-4C. As time went on, the F-4 evolved into well over a dozen variants.

The F-100C also received a new electronic bombing system and an in-flight re-fueling probe. A new engine increased speed at altitude by 40 mph and reduced time to climb to 35,000 feet by 10 percent.

The MiG-15 (NATO name Fagot) was designed from information and technology gathered from captured WWII Germans. The main features of the Mig-15 were its simplicity and swept wings. The MiG-15bis was an improved single-seat fighter with better cannon, fuel capacity, avionics and a Klimov turbojet engine developed using an unlicensed Rolls-Royce Nene engine. All this was put in a strengthened airframe. The Allies were completely surprised when the Mig-15 arrived in Korea and quickly brought about the development of the F-86 Sabre. There were a total of 364 MiG-15bisR built.

The F-105D was first accepted on September 28 1960 and became the major variant with 610 aircraft being built. Intended for a nuclear strike role but since the nuclear threat became less likely the role became a high-speed bomber. The Pitot tube was moved to the nose that had been extended approximately 15 inches more than the B. The D received strengthened landing gear and an arrestor hook in case it over shot the runway. During 1966 and 1967 F-105Ds managed to down 25 MiGs using the 20-mm cannon and 2 other using Side-Winder missiles.

The F-105Bs were transferred to ANG and AFRES units with their last flight in 1981 when they were sent to be scrapped. At least five aircraft were spared and sent to museums.

In 1996 the FS-X designation was changed to XF-2A and in December 1997 the TRDI serial was changed to JASDF serial 63-8501 c/n 1001.

Hobby Master 1/72 Japan F-2A 6 Hikotai, 50th Anniversary Scheme, Tsuiki Air Base, Oct 2009 "53-8535" (HA2706)
During the 1980s General Dynamics, the developer of the F-16, proposed another version of the F-16 called the F-16 Agile Falcon. The US military opted not to get involved because they were busy upgrading their present fleet as well as developing the new F- 22/JSF. Japan had decided to purchase the F-16 to replace its aging F-1 aircraft but then decided to develop the F-16 Agile Falcon concept. The new aircraft for the JASDF (Japan Air Self Defense Force) would be the F-2 and manufactured with a 60/40 split between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Lockheed Martin. Lockheed Martin bought General Dynamics in 1993. Production started in 1996 with the first aircraft being delivered in 2000. 94 of the F-2 aircraft are scheduled to be manufactured. It might look like an F-16 but the Mitsubishi F-2 is a completely new fighter. The general shape may say F-16 and a few things that the F-2 and the F-16 have common are the engine, landing gear, air intake door and the 20 mm gun. But the F-2 has a longer and wider nose to accommodate phased-array radar with 25% larger wing. It is made from a composite material to reduce weight and radar signature, a larger tail plane and larger air intake. The pilot canopy is a stronger three-piece construction. The F-2 is equipped with a drogue chute just like the NATO version of the F-16. The single seat fighter is the F-2A while the two seat version is a trainer that is fully Combat capable.

Hobby Master 1/72 Lockheed F-22 Raptor 192nd Fighter Wing "Crisps A'Mighty" (HA2803)
The USAF developed a requirement for a new air superiority fighter to replace the F-15 Eagle. Two proposals were submitted with the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor being selected as the new Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF). The aircraft is constructed using 39% titanium, 24% composite material, 16% aluminum and 1% thermoplastic by weight. All these components contribute to the F-22 being a light weight, extremely maneuverable, extremely fast aircraft that uses stealth technology.
