A sub-class of British Rails' standard 400bhp 0-6-0 shunts class 09 locomotives were geared for a higher top speed, as specified by the Southern region. Most were also fitted with high lever air brake connections for shunting electric multiple unit stock. These detailed models from Dapol feature a range of separately fitted parts, including the high level air pipes, to replicate this class. Inside the shell is a heavy chassis block holding a powerful 5-pole motor driving all three axles.
This model finished as D4106 in green livery with wasp stripe ends and late crest, as preserved on the Bluebell Railway, having been purchased as 09018 by a consortium of members of the railways' locomotive department and restored to British Railways green livery in 2017, but retaining the later fitted sealed beam headlight.

Along with the Southern class 09 shunters Gaugemaster have commissioned this model of 97800 in Network South East livery. Renumbered from 08600 when assigned to departmental service, initially in 'RTC' red and blue livery, this locomotive was named IVOR. In the mid-1980s 97800 was repainted into the Network South East livery then being applied to trains working London area suburban services.
97800 returned to capital stock 1989, regaining number 08600 also later acquiring a welsh dragon logo on the cab side!

British Railways' standard diesel heavy shunting locomotive was developed from late 1930s locomotives tested by the 'big four' companies. The 350/400bhp engine provides power for 2 traction motors geared down to drive the outer axles, coupled with side rods and giving massive torque. An 08 will haul almost anything at a maximum speed of 15mph! Over 1,000 were built in through the 1950s, eliminating steam shunting engines with new 'push-to-start' one-man operated diesels. In addition to shunting duties 08s were used on local goods and freight-only branch lines, just like the steam engines they replaced, but their limited speed has eliminated many of these scenic adventures (there were still a few in the 80s!) and the loss of the parcels/mail business eliminated 'station pilot' roles in the 90s. The small remaining fleet of 08s is kept busy today at depots, yards and heritage railways across Britain, still essential for making up trains, moving wagons for loading and shunting electric units to non-electrified sheds for servicing.
The well researched Dapol model features a powerful 5-pole motor with flywheel driving through a gear system designed for smooth slow speed running. The highly detailed bodyshell can be produced to replicate early batches of 08s (external hinge strapping, wood cab doors) and the later builds (internal hinges, steel cab doors) and allow for other common variations in footplate boxes etc. The cab features opening cab doors and interior detailing with control desk, brake stand and internal cable trunking.
