Dapol O UnNumbered BR Class 08 0-6-0 Diesel Shunting Engine Black Livery 7D-008-007U

Dapol O gauge 7D-008-004U UnNumbered BR Class 08 0-6-0 350bhp Diesel Shunter Black Livery

Dapol have produced a very finely detailed model of the British Railways standard heavy shunting engine, best known as class 08, but often referred to by railwaymen as '350s' from the original 350bhp engine rating. Developed from locomotives ordered by the big four railway companies in the late 1930s and through the 40s British Railways picked the most reliable equipment for their standard heavy diesel shunter. 996 locomotives were built between 1952 and 1962, replacing steam traction in yards and depots, with several hundred still at work on the national rail network, heritage railways and in industrial service.

The Dapol model is driven by a powerful 5-pole motor with a flywheel smoothing out the drive through a gear system designed to provide realistic smooth, slow speed running suitable for shunting work. Extensive research into the design variations within almost a thousand locomotives built by five different works over ten years has produced a highly detailed bodyshell replicating the first batches of 08s built with external hinge strapping on the bonnet side doors. The tooling is designed to allow for other common variations, with models available with one or two exhauster boxes at the front of the footplate and to replicate locomotives in early condition with radiator access ladders and later service when the ladders were removed. The cab has not been forgotten, with opening cab doors revealing interior detailing, control desk, brake stand and internal cable trunking.

This model is supplied without cabside numbers in the early plain black livery, ready for numbering as one of the class 08 locomotives built in the early 1950s. This is the model tooling and decoration used for the model of 13240, with wood cab doors and exhauster boxes on both sides.
DCC Ready with a 21-pin decoder connection and space provided for a speaker easily accessible under a 'clip in' bonnet roof section (5 or more decoder function outputs required). Equipped with sprung buffers, sprung coupling hook and 3 link chain coupling. Fitted with directional lighting including red/white shunting lamps.

Over 1000 class 08 type shunters were built and with over 60 years in service there are many differences between locomotives. This covers the number ranges whcih were supposed to have the same arrangement as the model, double-checking from photographs is suggested!

Locos up to 13336 (built Darlington 1957) were painted black, though 13336 (at least) was noted as having carriage type logos. While this was also the last batch built with external door hinges the front right hand side exhauster box had not been fitted from 13245 onwards.

Locos (supposed to have!) external door hinges and two exhauster boxes.
13000/D3000 to 13244/D3244.
This includes the Crossley (13117-13126) and first batches of Lister Blackstone (13137-13166) engined locomotives, the bodies of which were visually identical to the standard English Electric engined locos.
